Thane Hospitals Save Newborn With Severe Congenital Diaphragmatic Defect
Medical teams at Thane Civil Hospital and Kaushalya Hospital in Thane coordinated an emergency delivery and life-saving surgery on August 11 for a newborn diagnosed with a severe congenital diaphragmatic defect. The mother, a 28-year-old pregnant woman from Shahapur taluka, was brought to Thane Civil Hospital after a sonography scan revealed that the baby's abdominal organs had shifted into the chest cavity, displacing the heart to the right side.
Recognising the high complexity of the medical emergency, medical authorities arranged for the delivery to take place under close supervision. Civil Surgeon Dr. Kailas Pawar and Additional Civil Surgeon Dr. Dhiraj Mahangade guided the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the Pediatrics Department to formulate an advance care strategy, pre-coordinating with the surgical team at Kaushalya Hospital to ensure seamless post-delivery treatment.
On August 11, a surgical team led by Dr. Sachin Gholap and Dr. Rupali Yadav successfully performed a C-section delivery at Thane Civil Hospital. Immediately following birth, the infant suffered acute respiratory distress. Pediatricians Dr. Sushil Dubey, Dr. Aishwarya More, and Dr. Suresh Wankhede intervened without delay to stabilize the baby's vitals.
Once the infant was stable enough for transport, a 108 emergency ambulance led by Dr. Bansode deployed immediately to transfer the child to Kaushalya Hospital. Upon arrival, a specialized medical team comprising pediatric surgeon Dr. Sanjay Oak, Dr. Sanket Kulkarni, Megha More, and attending staff executed a complex surgical procedure. The team repaired the diaphragmatic defect and relocated the displaced abdominal organs back to their correct anatomical positions.
The newborn remains on ventilator support in critical condition following the surgery. Dr. Pawar commended the inter-departmental synergy and rapid response, noting that all departments at the Civil Hospital acted with speed and unity to provide the child a fighting chance at life.
