Thane Mayor Launches Mandatory Four Bin Waste Segregation Campaign

Thane Mayor Launches Mandatory Four Bin Waste Segregation Campaign

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) officially launched the 'Four Bin Thane Clean' campaign in Thane on Monday, making the source segregation of waste into four color-coded bins mandatory. Inaugurated by Thane Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar during an administrative capacity-building session, the environmental initiative aligns with the newly enacted Solid Waste Management Rules 2026 and Supreme Court directives.

Under the new regulatory framework, source segregation of waste is now compulsory across all residential, commercial, and institutional sectors. Residents and establishments must separate waste into four distinct streams to optimize recycling and eco-friendly processing.

The system utilizes four color-coded bins for disposal: Green for wet and organic kitchen waste; Blue for dry recyclables such as paper, plastic, and glass; Red for sanitary waste including diapers and hygiene products; and Black for special domestic hazardous waste like batteries, bulbs, and e-waste.

The policy also introduces stricter mandates for Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs). These are defined as entities with more than 20,000 square meters of built-up area, daily water consumption exceeding 40,000 liters, or those generating more than 100 kilograms of waste per day. Under the new rules, these establishments are legally required to register on the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) portal and process their wet waste through localized, on-site facilities.

TMC Health Officer Dr. Rani Shinde highlighted that these rules apply universally, including to industrial zones, Special Economic Zones (SEZs), airports, and railway stations.

To ensure compliance with the campaign, the civic body will enforce user fees and strict financial penalties for any violations. Additionally, the open dumping or burning of garbage is now completely prohibited. Civic authorities have urged citizens and housing societies to cooperate to help transform Thane into a sustainable urban center.
