Thane Metro 4 Phase 1 Gets Rolling Stock Safety Clearance for Gaimukh-Cadbury Route

The first phase of Thane’s Metro 4 and 4A has moved closer to passenger operations after obtaining safety clearance for its rolling stock on the corridor between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction.

The regulatory milestone covers the trains to be deployed on the initial operational stretch by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The first phase comprises a 10.5-kilometre section covering eight stations.

A total of six rakes are scheduled to operate for passenger services on this initial stretch. Because the main Metro 4 depot remains under construction, MMRDA developed a dedicated pit line at Gaimukh to manage stabling, inspection, and routine maintenance of the trains.

The Gaimukh facility includes two island platforms and four lines. Two of the lines will support passenger operations, while the other two have been allocated for train servicing and handling. Officials from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) recently carried out an inspection of the pit line, and final clearance for the facility is currently awaited.

The rolling stock safety clearance follows the corridor's Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) certification, which was received on June 2, 2026, after nearly 209 days of coordination and testing. The RDSO evaluation assessed critical infrastructure, including rolling stock, tracks, signalling, operating speeds, and safety mechanisms.

Prior to this clearance, trial runs were conducted on an initial 4.4-kilometre section covering Gaimukh, Govaniwada, Kasarvadavali, and Vijay Garden. The trains had remained stationed on the elevated tracks for several months during the process.

The entire Metro Line 4 corridor spans 32.32 kilometres between Wadala and Kasarvadavali, while Metro 4A extends the route by an additional 2.88 kilometres toward Gaimukh. Once fully operational, the combined network is designed to provide key connectivity between Thane and Mumbai.
