Thane Municipal Transport Loses Over ₹27 Lakh In Five Days Due To Torrential Rains

Torrential rains in Thane city between July 4 and July 8 caused severe waterlogging and a drastic drop in commuter ridership, leading to a financial revenue loss exceeding ₹27 lakh for the Thane Municipal Transport (TMT). The heavy downpour resulted in severe waterlogging across several key localities, including Ram Maruti Road, Naupada, Kalwa, Mumbra, Diva, the Vandana Cinema area, and the Ghodbunder Road flyovers, which paralyzed daily life and severely disrupted vehicular movement.
According to transport statistics, the civic public transport body suffered the revenue loss over a five-day period as residents were forced to remain indoors. Knee-deep water in major markets and waterlogged potholes on the Ghodbunder Road flyovers stalled the city’s mobility, which directly impacted TMT's daily collections. The transport body typically averages over ₹25 lakh in daily collections.
On July 3, the undertaking recorded a stable revenue of ₹25,34,822. However, as the heavy rains began, collections plummeted sharply to ₹20,44,333 on July 4. The revenue hit a weekly low of ₹14,13,425 on July 5, reflecting the peak of the disruption.
The subsequent days saw a gradual recovery in earnings as the weather began to clear. TMT registered revenue collections of ₹17,49,795 on July 6, ₹22,40,064 on July 7, and ₹24,37,578 on July 8.
Fortunately, as the heavy downpour subsided, commuter footfall rebounded rapidly across the city. On July 9, TMT recorded a robust revenue collection of ₹29,06,291, which significantly surpassed its usual daily average.
Transport officials noted that while summer vacations in April and May had previously slowed down ridership, the reopening of schools, colleges, and offices has firmly restored normal demand for the public transport service.
