Thane Records 115 mm Rain as IMD Issues Orange Alert for Tuesday

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Tuesday in Thane and Mumbai, following a major revival of the southwest monsoon starting last weekend. The weather bureau warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, alongside strong gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph across the region.

The monsoon regained momentum after a brief lull last week, bringing moderate rainfall across several areas of Mumbai and the adjoining metropolitan region. However, South Mumbai remained relatively dry compared to the suburbs, which experienced much heavier downpours.

In the 24 hours leading up to Monday at 8:30 am, Thane recorded a significant 115 mm of rainfall, making it one of the wettest areas in the region during this period.

According to data from the IMD, there was a stark contrast in rainfall distribution between South Mumbai and the suburbs. The Colaba observatory in South Mumbai recorded just 5.6 mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period ending Monday morning. Meanwhile, the Santacruz observatory in the suburbs received 88.4 mm of rain.

Other neighbouring districts also experienced heavy downpours alongside Thane. Navi Mumbai recorded an average of 92.10 mm of rainfall during the same 24-hour timeframe ending Monday at 8:30 am.

Weather experts noted that the city and its surrounding areas are witnessing the anticipated revival of the southwest monsoon after the brief lull last week. The weather bureau expects the rainfall activity to intensify further on Tuesday, which prompted the orange alert for both Thane and Mumbai.

Following Tuesday's heavy weather warning, the wet spell is projected to continue. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for both Thane and Mumbai for July 22 and July 23. This yellow alert indicates the likelihood of heavy rainfall at isolated places across the two cities.
