Thane Schools and Colleges Closed on July 4 as Red Alert Issued for Heavy Rain

The local administration suspended all classes in schools and colleges within the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation limits on Saturday, July 4, following a high-alert red warning for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Thane district. The Regional Meteorological Department upgraded the district's status from an orange alert to a red alert for July 4 and July 5, prompting authorities to take immediate precautionary measures.
To ensure the safety of students and staff, the suspension applies to all primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools, as well as colleges. This order covers institutions across all educational boards, including the State Board, CBSE, ICSE, and CIE.
The Maharashtra State Disaster Management Department issued the high-alert warning as heavy downpours continued to lash the state. In addition to Thane, red alerts were issued for Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts between July 4 and July 6. The ghat areas of Satara, Pune, and Nashik are also expected to receive moderate to heavy rain.
State and local administrations warned residents of potential travel disruptions, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and minor structural damage. In neighbouring Palghar district, the local administration declared a two-day holiday for all schools, colleges, and Anganwadis starting Friday, urging residents to only leave their homes for essential work.
The continuous rainfall has already impacted infrastructure in the wider region. A landslide occurred in the Saptashrungi Gad Ghat area of Nashik, where debris and large boulders rolled onto the road. Local residents and disaster management personnel cleared the debris to restore traffic, and no casualties or injuries were reported.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid visiting waterlogged areas or mountain passes unnecessarily.
