Thane to Vadape Highway Widening Reaches 92 Percent Completion

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has completed 92 percent of the expansion work on the 23.8-kilometre Vadape–Thane Road on the Old Mumbai-Nashik National Highway. The project, which aims to ease chronic traffic congestion between Thane, Bhiwandi, and Nashik, has already seen the completion of key local structures including the Kalwa Creek Bridge, Kasheli Creek Bridge, and the Kharegaon underpass. Major civil works are expected to be completed by August 2026, while the remaining railway overbridge is targeted for completion by September 2026.

The highway is being widened into an eight-lane corridor with two-lane service roads on both sides. This expansion is designed to significantly improve traffic flow, particularly for heavy commercial vehicles accessing the warehouse hub in Bhiwandi.

According to progress reports, 22.46 kilometres of the 23.8-kilometre main carriageway has been completed. Additionally, 17.40 kilometres of the planned 18.35-kilometre service roads are now finished.

While major structures like the Kalwa Creek Bridge, Kasheli Creek Bridge, and the Vadape Flyover are fully complete, work continues on the 84-metre railway overbridge. The overbridge has reached 72 percent completion. Girder launching for the structure began after the Railway Department granted permission on May 25, and officials expect to finish it by September 2026.

The project also features 10 vehicular underpasses to eliminate traffic bottlenecks. Seven of these underpasses—located at Yewai, Walshind, Sonale, Saravali, Dive, and Kharegaon—have already been completed.

The remaining three underpasses are in their final stages. The Pimplas underpass is at 75 percent completion, with its structure finished but approach roads pending due to alignment with the railway overbridge. The Ovali underpass has reached 82 percent completion and is scheduled to be ready by August. Meanwhile, the Mankoli-Motagaon underpass is at 75 percent completion and is also expected to be finished next month.

The expansion project is an important part of the traffic dispersal strategy linked to the Mumbai–Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg. It is being executed at an estimated cost of around Rs 1,182 crore under the Hybrid Annuity Model. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will bear the upfront cost of the project and repay MSRDC in instalments over a 15-year period.
