Third-Floor Balcony Collapses at Bhagirathi Apartment in Thane's Chendani Area

A portion of a third-floor balcony at the Bhagirathi Apartment in the Chendani area of Thane (West) collapsed on Monday morning, June 29, triggering an emergency response and the demolition of the remaining unstable structure. No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident, which occurred at approximately 3:09 AM near the Flower Market and Shani Temple.
The Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) received an emergency call immediately after the collapse at the ground-plus-four-storey residential building. The structure houses approximately 50 residents across 13 tenements.
According to civic officials, a section of the balcony belonging to Room 301 abruptly crashed down while residents were asleep. The flat is owned by Swasti Postule and occupied by tenant Vinay Gupta.
The collapse left the remaining portion of the balcony dangling in a highly precarious condition, posing an immediate threat to the area. Former local corporator Sanjay Waghule observed the hazard and immediately alerted the authorities to the danger.
In response to the alert, a team comprising TMC Disaster Management Officer Y.M. Tadvi, Junior Engineer Ganesh Rane from the Public Works Department (PWD), and Fire Station Deputy Officer Munde rushed to the spot. They arrived with a fire tender and rescue vehicles to secure the area. Personnel from the Naupada-Kopri Ward Committee also joined the emergency operations.
The emergency crews swiftly demolished the remaining unstable portions of the dangling balcony to ensure public safety. As a precautionary measure, Room 301 was completely evacuated, and its occupants safely relocated to a relative's house.
Following the emergency demolition, the PWD branch of the Naupada-Kopri Ward Committee will undertake further structural evaluations of the building to determine any necessary future action.
