Three Rescued After Bungalow Collapses Onto Chawl in Walkeshwar

Three people were safely rescued on Saturday morning after a portion of an old bungalow collapsed onto an adjoining chawl on Walkeshwar Road in South Mumbai's Tin Batti area.

The incident took place at around 9:45 am opposite the Anurag Building and near Jabareshwar Gully in Walkeshwar. According to civic officials, a portion of the ground-plus-two-storey structure collapsed and crashed directly onto the neighbouring Ganga Ashram chawl.

Three residents, identified as 65-year-old Nirmala Singh, 45-year-old Mahindra Singh, and 55-year-old Laxmi Shukla, were trapped beneath the fallen debris following the collapse. Emergency responders were able to extricate all three individuals after they remained trapped for about half an hour. Civic officials confirmed that all three were found to be unharmed, and no injuries were reported from the scene.

Emergency response units were dispatched to the site immediately after the incident was reported. Personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police, ambulance services, and the local civic ward were deployed to manage the situation and conduct search and rescue operations. Rescue teams thoroughly combed through the collapsed section and surrounding areas to verify that no other individuals remained trapped under the rubble.

The structure has been identified as a cessed building, known as the Fancy Nest building. Civic officials stated that the exact cause behind the collapse is yet to be determined. Following the incident, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) notified the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) to take further necessary action regarding the site.
