Tilaknagar Residents Honour Captain Smit Machchhar After Mid-Air Attack Averted

Hundreds of citizens carrying national flags gathered outside the residence of Captain Smit Machchhar at Swastik Heights in Tilaknagar in eastern Mumbai on Thursday, October 1, to honour his bravery after he thwarted an attempt by his co-pilot to crash a commercial aircraft. Machchhar managed to save 174 people aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 after being stabbed inside the cockpit during a flight from the United Arab Emirates to Tel Aviv, Israel.
The incident took place on Wednesday when the co-pilot stabbed Machchhar, sending the jet plunging nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds. Despite his injuries, Machchhar intervened and prevented a major aviation disaster, ensuring the safe recovery of the flight.
Outside the Swastik Heights residential complex in Tilaknagar, neighbours and supporters held photographs of the pilot and offered prayers for his quick recovery. Amid chants of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai', several citizens who assembled outside the building advocated for national honours, calling for Machchhar to receive a gallantry award such as the Shaurya Chakra or the Bharat Ratna.
Neighbours praised Machchhar's composure and quick thinking during the crisis. Daulatbhai Vora, a neighbour who had previous business ties with the pilot's father, said he had known Machchhar since childhood. Vora noted that Machchhar's father raised both of his sons remarkably well and added that the pilot's patience and presence of mind averted a serious catastrophe.
Childhood friends also shared memories of Machchhar's character. Pratik Gandhi, who grew up playing cricket with him, described Machchhar as an ambitious yet grounded individual who was known for maintaining his composure and calm under high-pressure situations.
Another childhood friend, Amit Soni, described Machchhar as a lively and cheerful person, adding that his actions brought pride to all Mumbaikars. Soni explained that Machchhar's parents reside in a flat in the Tilaknagar building, while the captain lives in Dubai with his wife and two children and visits Mumbai frequently. He noted that the neighbourhood plans to arrange a grand welcome when Machchhar next returns to Mumbai.
Machchhar remains hospitalised in Tabuk city in northwest Saudi Arabia, where he is receiving medical care for his injuries. The Indian Embassy in Riyadh stated in a social media update that diplomatic officials alongside the Consulate General of India in Jeddah are closely monitoring his condition and maintaining regular contact with his family.
