TMC Clears Illegal Encroachments Across Vartak Nagar Ward No 4
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) executed a sweeping late-night anti-encroachment drive across the Vartak Nagar Ward Committee region on Monday, August 10, 2026, dismantling unauthorised commercial structures and clearing public walkways for pedestrian safety. The high-impact civic operation covered Ward No. 4, stretching along a busy transit corridor from Gandhinagar via Vasant Vihar Circle and Kashinath Ghanekar Circle to Nilkanth Road in Thane.
The enforcement action was launched to reclaim public footpaths and address persistent complaints from local residents regarding blocked walkways. These unauthorised commercial installations had forced pedestrians off the footpaths and into active traffic lanes, creating safety hazards along the transit route.
During the ground operations, the civic task force confiscated and cleared multiple illegal structures and vendor setups. The cleared items included four illegal handcarts, known locally as hatgadi, and one unauthorised paan kiosk, or pan tapri. Municipal personnel also removed four wooden commercial tables along with 12 illegal wooden sheds and temporary extensions that had encroached onto the public space.
To carry out the demolition and clearance, municipal authorities deployed a specialized team backed by heavy machinery. The operational setup included one heavy JCB excavator, two transport tempos for hauling away seized materials, 11 personnel from the Maharashtra Security Force (MSF), and 14 municipal workers.
The anti-encroachment drive was led on-site under the direct guidance of Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Jitendra Nikam. He was joined during the operation by Zone 3 Deputy Commissioners Manish Joshi and Dinesh Tayde, as well as Assistant Commissioner Ganesh Choudhary.
This enforcement drive follows explicit mandates issued by Thane Mayor Sharmila Pimpalkar and Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, who directed ward officers across the city to eliminate footpath encroachments. Furthermore, elected representatives had recently voiced strong concerns regarding rising vendor encroachments during a TMC General Body assembly.
To ensure that street vendors do not reoccupy the cleared areas along Nilkanth Road, Vasant Vihar Circle, Kashinath Ghanekar Circle, and Gandhinagar, the TMC confirmed that daily monitoring and routine inspections will continue in the region to keep pedestrian spaces permanently accessible.
