Track Cave-In Disrupts Trans-Harbour Train Services Between Thane and Vashi

Heavy monsoon rains overnight caused a track cave-in between Turbhe and Koparkhairane stations, disrupting Central Railway's Trans-Harbour line services between Thane and Vashi on Wednesday morning, June 24, 2026. The incident, triggered by excessive water flow, resulted in major train delays and severe overcrowding at stations during the morning peak hours.

According to Central Railway officials, the track cave-in occurred after an intense spell of wet weather. A spokesperson for Central Railway confirmed that the up line on the Thane-Vashi section was declared unsafe at 5:06 am. The down line was subsequently declared unsafe at 5:50 am, bringing train operations to a halt.

Maintenance teams worked to secure the affected section. The up line was restored at 7:27 am, with trains required to run at a restricted speed of 10 kmph. The down line was declared safe shortly after at 7:35 am, with a speed restriction of 30 kmph.

The disruption left hundreds of commuters stranded, leading to heavily crowded platforms at several stations. A Central Railway official explained that the track cave-in was a direct result of excess water flow from the heavy downpour that battered the region.

The overnight rainfall, which marked the arrival of the southwest monsoon 13 days after its normal onset date, caused widespread issues across the metropolitan area. Between 8:30 pm on Tuesday, June 23, and 5:30 am on Wednesday, June 24, three weather stations recorded extremely heavy rain exceeding 200 mm.

In nearby areas, the heavy downpour also caused waterlogging, a wall collapse in Vikhroli West, and a fallen tree that injured a driver. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that waterlogging occurred temporarily at several locations, including the Andheri Subway, Hindmata, Dadar, and the Malad Subway, but noted that the water had receded and road traffic had resumed normal operations by Wednesday morning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, warning of continued moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. Civic and disaster management teams remain on alert to monitor further rain-related incidents.
