Tree Collapse Near Mulund Station Blocks Traffic As Red Alert Batters Mumbai

A massive tree collapse near Mulund railway station on Monday morning brought traffic to a complete halt during rush hour, as heavy rains and strong winds of up to 70–80 kmph battered Mumbai. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red weather alert for Monday and Tuesday, warning of continued heavy rainfall and gusty winds across the city.

IMD scientist Bikram Singh confirmed on Monday that the red alert remains in effect until Tuesday for Mumbai, as well as Raigad, Ratnagiri, Palghar, Nashik, and the ghat regions of Pune district. Singh noted that while rainfall activity in Mumbai is expected to decrease, leading to a likely downgrade of the warning, moderate rainfall and strong gusty winds will continue to pose a significant threat.

According to Singh, the winds reaching speeds of 70–80 kmph on Monday remain a major concern. He warned that such strong winds can bring down old and large trees, and pose a risk to kutcha houses and old buildings. Singh advised residents living in these vulnerable areas to remain highly cautious.

The impact of the weather was felt severely in Mulund West on Monday morning. A large tree was uprooted and fell completely across the road near the busy Mulund railway station. Visuals from the spot showed the fallen tree blocking the entire carriageway, leaving long queues of vehicles stranded on both sides and causing significant inconvenience to commuters.

Beyond the incident near Mulund, several other parts of Mumbai experienced waterlogging, flooding, and multiple reports of tree collapses. In response to the ongoing conditions, local authorities have appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors. Residents have also been advised to stay away from seafronts, weak structures, trees, electric poles, and flood-prone areas.
