Truck Ruptures Surya Yojana Water Pipeline Near Nalasopara on Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway

A speeding truck rammed into and ruptured a major water pipeline of the Surya Yojana network along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway near Nalasopara in the Vasai-Virar region on Friday morning. The collision caused lakhs of litres of water to wastefully gush 20 to 25 feet into the air, worsening local traffic congestion and threatening water supply disruptions across the area.
The damaged pipeline is a critical component of the Surya Yojana network, which serves as the primary water supply system for Vasai-Virar city. Authorities stated that the impact from the vehicle caused a significant breach in the line, leading to massive water wastage before emergency teams could intervene.
Videos from the scene captured water gushing high above the highway like a fountain before cascading onto the active roadway. The continuous, high-pressure flow of water further aggravated waterlogging in the immediate area, which was already struggling with accumulation from persistent monsoon rains.
Upon receiving information about the accident, officials and repair crews from the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation's water supply department rushed to the highway site. The department launched restoration operations on a war footing, though officials noted that the work is expected to take several hours to complete.
The ongoing monsoon rainfall has made the repair process significantly more challenging for the municipal teams. Because of the extensive damage to the Surya Yojana network, officials have warned residents that the water supply in parts of Vasai-Virar may remain disrupted. Some localities in the region could also face a temporary suspension of their water supply until the pipeline is fully restored.
In addition to the utility damage, the incident severely impacted commuters. Traffic movement along the Nalasopara stretch of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway slowed to a crawl as water accumulated heavily on the carriageway. This accident occurred amid wider rain-related disruptions across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where several areas have recorded over 100 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period.
