Twelve Homes Evacuated in Sanjay Nagar After Retaining Wall Collapse

On Saturday afternoon, July 4, 2026, emergency response teams evacuated 10 to 12 homes in the Sanjay Nagar area of Mumbra, Thane, following a retaining wall collapse and subsequent soil cave-in. The incident occurred behind the Durga Hotel, prompting immediate action from local authorities to prevent any loss of life. No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.

The emergency alert was received by the Thane Municipal Corporation’s (TMC) Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) control room at 12:28 pm on Saturday. Upon receiving the call, officials immediately mobilized resources to address the structural failure.

According to officials, the collapse of the retaining wall caused a significant portion of the underlying slope's soil to shift and cave in. This sudden shift compromised the stability of the immediate ground, placing the adjacent residential properties at direct risk.

Recognizing the potential hazard to human life, civic officials decided to carry out the evacuation of 10 to 12 neighboring houses as a stringent precautionary measure. The residents were safely moved away from the affected zone.

A coordinated emergency response team was deployed to the site to secure the perimeter and assess the structural damage. This team included personnel from the Public Works Department (PWD), Fire Brigade officers and jawans, and local disaster management staff from the Mumbra Ward Committee.

The civic body has formally registered the complaint regarding the collapse. It has directed the relevant engineering wings to expedite stabilization operations at the site. The PWD has assumed control of the affected area to initiate immediate remedial measures.

Furthermore, the Disaster Management Officer has issued directives instructing on-site officials to closely monitor the situation. The officials must submit a comprehensive Action Taken Report (ATR) regarding the stabilization progress to the central disaster management cell.
