Two college students including Andheri resident drown in Dahisar East quarry
An 19-year-old college student from Andheri and his 18-year-old classmate drowned in a quarry at the Shaikh Khadaan Compound near Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Dahisar East on Saturday morning. The incident occurred around 10:20 AM after a group of four students skipped their classes, consumed beer, and went for a swim despite none of them knowing how to swim.
The deceased have been identified as Om Singh, 19, who resided in Andheri, and Piyush Gupta, 18, a resident of Kandivali. Both were first-year Commerce students at a degree college located in Kandivali.
According to the police, Singh and Gupta had skipped college on Saturday along with two of their classmates, identified as 17-year-old Aman Giri and 17-year-old Divyesh Patel. The group of four made their way to the Shaikh Khadaan Compound, situated near Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Dahisar East.
Before entering the quarry, the group spent time near the water. One of the boys later informed the police that they had consumed beer near the quarry prior to venturing into the water. None of the four teenagers knew how to swim.
At approximately 10:20 AM, Singh and Gupta decided to venture into the deeper sections of the quarry water. Meanwhile, their classmates, Giri and Patel, chose to remain near the edge of the quarry.
As they moved further out, Singh and Gupta began experiencing severe difficulties and started struggling to breathe in the deep water. Realising their friends were in danger, Giri and Patel attempted a rescue. They threw their college bags into the water, hoping that Singh and Gupta would be able to grab hold of them and be pulled back to safety.
However, the improvised rescue attempt failed to save the two struggling students. Following the unsuccessful attempt, one of the boys contacted the police control room to report the emergency.
Personnel from the local police and the fire brigade quickly arrived at the quarry. Working alongside local residents, the fire brigade managed to retrieve the bodies of Singh and Gupta from the water. Both victims were subsequently transported to a nearby hospital.
