Two Crane Operators Injured After Fire at Mumbai Port

Two crane operators sustained injuries after a crane caught fire during a cargo-lifting operation at the BPS port within the Mumbai Port premises on Sunday evening, August 30.

The incident took place around 7.30 pm when a 140-metric-tonne cargo was being lifted from the Barbados-flagged vessel Vienna. The lifting operation was being conducted using two cranes operated by Barkat Company.

According to preliminary information, the strap attached to the cargo on one of the cranes became imbalanced and came loose during the lift. This caused the heavy load to shift suddenly onto the second crane. As a result, the second crane was lifted off the ground, and its front telescopic boom struck the vessel.

The friction generated by the impact reportedly led to the crane catching fire. The Mumbai Port fire brigade responded immediately to the location and managed to extinguish the blaze.

The two injured crane operators have been identified as Ranjit Singh and Nishant Singh. Both workers were taken to St George Hospital for medical treatment.

Officials from the Yellow Gate Police Station arrived at the scene following the mishap. An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the accident.
