Two Days Of Heavy Rain Submerge Vasai-Virar Roads And Flood Houses

Heavy torrential rainfall lashed Vasai-Virar for two consecutive days from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning, causing widespread waterlogging, severe traffic disruptions, and flooding in homes and shops. The downpour severely affected several localities including Pelhar, Mandvi, Virar, Nalasopara, and key transit routes like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway. Local residents, school students, and daily commuters struggled to navigate the inundated areas.
The intense spell of rain, which began on Tuesday evening, remained heavy through Wednesday morning. During this period, the city recorded an average rainfall of 78.25 mm. The combined rainfall across all eight municipal divisions of the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) reached approximately 690 mm, highlighting the scale of the deluge.
Pelhar and Mandvi divisions emerged as the worst-affected areas, recording the highest rainfall in the region. The heavy downpour led to severe waterlogging at several locations along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway. This significantly disrupted the movement of traffic, forcing vehicles to navigate the flooded highway at a very slow pace.
In addition to the highway, several major roads and low-lying areas across the city were completely submerged. In Virar, waterlogging was reported around the Viva College area, Kumbharpada Road, Shriprastha Road, and Suncity Gas Road. In Nalasopara, water accumulated in Tulinj, Vijay Nagar, Dhaniv Baug, Naygaon Star City, Chulne, Bangli Road, Devtalav, and Giriz.
The flooding caused severe hardship for local citizens. Residents, school students, and daily commuters had to wade through knee-deep water to reach their destinations. Water also entered numerous houses, chawls, and shops located in low-lying areas, forcing people to quickly move their belongings to safer spots. The continuous rainfall also triggered incidents of tree collapses at a few locations.
To address the crisis, the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation initiated emergency measures to bring the situation under control. The civic body deployed water pumping machines across the worst-affected areas. Large-scale dewatering operations were set in motion to clear the accumulated rainwater from the streets and restore normalcy to the region.
