Two Dead and Six Trapped After Landslide Hits Kurla West Chawl in Mumbai

Two people were killed and one was injured after a landslide hit Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, Kurla West, in Mumbai's eastern suburbs on Wednesday morning, August 12, 2026. The disaster occurred at approximately 3:48 a.m. near Rathod Medical. At least six people are reported to be trapped beneath the rubble, with rescue teams actively searching the area.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) classified the event as a Level II emergency incident. According to a civic official, debris collapsed directly onto nearby rooms of the chawl structure. Eyewitness accounts provided at the scene indicated that six to eight individuals were caught under the debris when the collapse happened.

The two victims who died in the incident were identified as Sohel Ansari, aged 18, and Mohamad Ansari, aged 14. Both were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital for medical treatment. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Vishal declared Mohamad brought dead upon arrival, while Sohel sustained head injuries. One additional person suffered injuries during the landslide.

A major multi-agency rescue operation is currently underway at the site. The response team includes personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) working alongside 50 BMC personnel to locate and extract those buried under the fallen structure.

Fire brigade and emergency services deployed heavy equipment and leadership to the scene, including two divisional fire officers, an assistant divisional fire officer, two senior station officers, and four station officers. They are supported by four fire engines, two fire tenders, two rescue vehicles, two mobile water tankers, and one water quick response vehicle. BMC Mayor Ritu Tawade also reached the location to inspect the ongoing rescue effort.
