Two Families Donate Organs At Girgaum Hospital To Save Eight Lives

On Friday, the families of two women declared brain dead at the H N Reliance Foundation Hospital in Girgaum, Mumbai, consented to donate their organs on the same day. The dual donations marked a rare feat for the city's organ donation programme, giving a fresh lease of life to eight patients suffering from end-stage organ failure.

The first donor was a 39-year-old woman who had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury during a road accident. Following her diagnosis of brain death at the Girgaum facility, her family agreed to donate her lungs, heart, liver, and kidneys.

The second donor was a 59-year-old stroke patient who was also declared brain dead at the same hospital on Friday. Her family consented to donate her liver and kidneys to patients in need of transplants.

The organ allocation was managed by the Zonal Transplantation Coordination Centre (ZTCC). Among the recipients, the patient who received the lungs was in critical condition inside the intensive care unit of H N Reliance Foundation Hospital when the ZTCC assigned the organ to him.

A total of five of the eight transplant surgeries were successfully conducted within H N Reliance Foundation Hospital. The remaining organs were transported to other medical institutions to save lives.

The donated heart was sent to the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology located in Ahmedabad. Additionally, two of the four donated kidneys were distributed to other hospitals in the Mumbai region. One kidney was sent to a patient registered at Jaslok Hospital on Pedder Road, while another was sent to Apollo Hospital in Nerul.

The coordinated effort between the donor families, hospital staff, and the ZTCC resulted in a successful series of transplants, saving eight lives from end-stage organ failure.
