Two Guillain-Barre Syndrome Cases in Panvel Prompt Water Testing and Health Surveys

The Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has launched a health survey and collected water samples for testing in Takka village, Panvel, after two cases of the rare autoimmune disorder Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) were confirmed in the locality within the last fortnight. The civic body initiated the preventive drive to check for potential water contamination, which is a known trigger for the disease.

Both patients were reported from the Aadhar Multispecialty Hospital in Panvel, and both reside in Takka village. The first patient is a 40-year-old male who is a resident of Chowk in Khalapur taluka and had previously come from Vichumbe village. He was discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment on June 15.

The second patient is a 71-year-old female from Konkan who is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. Health officials noted that she has a travel history related to the Chardham journey.

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a serious condition where the body develops antibodies against its own nervous system, affecting the brain and causing other neurological symptoms. The disorder is typically triggered by a preceding viral or bacterial infection, which can be contracted by consuming contaminated water or eating outside food.

Following the confirmation of the two cases, PCMC Medical Officer Dr. Anand Gosavi stated that health surveys have commenced in the areas where the patients stayed. Civic health officials have gathered water samples from these suspected locations to test for contamination.

Dr. Gosavi urged residents not to panic, noting that the patients were not originally from the local municipal area. However, he advised citizens to take strict precautions. The medical officer recommended that people consume boiled water, avoid eating outside food, and ensure they eat properly boiled and warm food. He added that the corporation is taking all adequate measures to handle the situation.
