Two Injured, Four Vehicles Damaged as Peepal Tree Falls in Churchgate

Two people were injured and four vehicles were damaged after a massive peepal tree fell near the B-2 Metro Station, opposite Kelan Bhavan in Churchgate, on Monday afternoon.

The incident was reported at approximately 12:36 pm, prompting the immediate mobilisation of the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police, and municipal ward staff to the spot. Emergency responders rescued the two injured individuals and transported them to nearby medical facilities. Both victims were reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities identified the injured persons as Sandeep Gamre, 55, and Shakil Yunus, 62. Gamre was admitted to Bombay Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a clavicle fracture (broken collarbone). Yunus was admitted to GT Hospital for treatment. Both individuals remain under medical care.

In addition to the damaged vehicles, the falling tree struck a nearby stall and obstructed one side of the carriageway, causing temporary traffic congestion across the area. Civic and emergency personnel remained deployed at the scene to clear the fallen branches and debris to restore normal traffic flow.

A subsequent inspection by civic officials indicated that the tree was located on private property adjacent to the compound wall and plinth of an under-construction six-storey building. During the assessment, officials noticed that excavation work had been taking place around the base of the tree.

"The tree was located within private premises, adjacent to the compound wall and the plinth of an under-construction six-storey building. During our inspection, we found excavation work being carried out around the tree. As our teams were engaged in clearing the fallen tree and inspecting the site, a detailed report will now be prepared and submitted to the higher authorities, recommending further action against those responsible," a civic official said.
