Two Killed, Two Injured in Ghatkopar Landslide; Mayor Announces Financial Aid
Two persons were killed and two others injured after a landslide struck Gaushiya Chawl in the Ashok Nagar locality of Chirag Nagar, Ghatkopar, early on Wednesday morning following heavy rain. Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reported that the hillside landslide occurred at 3.48 am, when a portion of soil and debris collapsed onto two to three houses, causing casualties and heavy damage.
Emergency rescue teams recovered two bodies from the debris and sent them to Rajawadi Hospital. Officials identified the two injured survivors as Sohel Ansari, who suffered a head injury, and Mohamad Ansari, who sustained a back injury. Both injured persons were undergoing treatment at the civic-run Bhabha Hospital in Kurla, where officials confirmed they were in stable condition.
Some people were feared trapped in the debris as search and rescue operations continued at the site. Teams from the fire brigade, police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), ambulance service, and local civic ward staff were deployed to carry out the operation.
Civic officials noted that the rescue operation was exceptionally challenging due to the physical layout of the area. The route leading to the affected houses is extremely narrow, allowing only one person to pass through at a time. This narrow access made it difficult for rescue teams to deploy heavy machinery to clear the debris.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde arrived at the spot in Ghatkopar to supervise the rescue operations firsthand. During her visit, she met with the affected families and offered them official support.
The mayor announced immediate financial assistance of ₹4 lakh to the next of kin of each person who died in the incident. She also announced ₹50,000 towards the medical treatment of each injured person.
Mayor Tawde directed all agencies involved in the rescue operation to intensify their search efforts and maintain close coordination. The administration stated it was closely monitoring the situation as rescue operations remained underway.
