Two Teenagers Die After Tempo Hits Scooter on Ghatkopar-Andheri Link Road
Two teenage boys have died following a road accident beneath the Jagruti Nagar Metro Station on the Ghatkopar-Andheri Link Road after a speeding tempo rammed into their scooter from behind early Sunday morning.
The victims have been identified as 14-year-old Ganesh Sunil Mahamuni and 15-year-old Aryan Paswan. Ganesh, who was riding the scooter, died shortly after the collision, while Aryan succumbed to critical injuries at Rajawadi Hospital on Monday, taking the death toll to two.
Ghatkopar police have arrested the tempo driver, identified as 34-year-old Prem Prakash Baldevram. Officers tracked down the vehicle, bearing registration number KA 52 C 4402, and identified the driver using CCTV footage recorded at the accident spot.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the collision occurred at around 5:15 a.m. while the two teenagers were travelling towards Ghatkopar railway station on the eastbound carriageway of the link road. Ganesh, a Class IX student residing in Siddharth Nagar, Bhatwadi, Ghatkopar West, had taken the family's Honda Activa scooter without his father's knowledge to go out on a school holiday. Aryan, who was his neighbour and friend, was riding as the pillion passenger.
Ganesh's father, Sunil Narayan Mahamuni, a 44-year-old Mathadi worker, was informed about the crash by an unidentified person. After discovering that the scooter keys and the vehicle were missing from their usual parking spot at Ramji Nagar Ground No. 2, he went directly to the crash site.
Upon arriving at the scene, Sunil found Aryan severely injured, while local residents had already transported Ganesh to Rajawadi Hospital. Sunil accompanied Aryan to the hospital in an ambulance, where doctors subsequently declared Ganesh dead. Aryan remained under medical care before passing away from his injuries on Monday.
Police have registered a case against Baldevram under Sections 106, 281, and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, for rash and negligent driving causing death. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
