Two workers injured as powerloom factory shed collapses in Fatima Nagar, Bhiwandi

A powerloom factory shed collapsed on Saturday afternoon in Fatima Nagar, located in the Nagaon area of Bhiwandi, leaving two workers injured. The incident occurred at U.S. Textile, a powerloom unit owned by Salma Anwar Khan inside the New Azmi Compound on 100-Feet Road, during a lunch break when most of the workforce was out of the building.

The two injured workers sustained minor injuries and were provided with immediate medical assistance. Officials noted that a major tragedy was narrowly averted because the majority of the factory's workers had stepped outside for their lunch interval when the structure crashed down.

The collapse has raised serious safety concerns regarding dangerous industrial units operating in the region. According to sources, the building housing U.S. Textile had already been declared dangerous by the Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC), which had reportedly issued an official notice to the occupants. Despite the warning, operations at the powerloom factory had continued.

Following the collapse, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sapna Vasava, along with senior civic officials, the Fire Brigade, and the Disaster Management Cell, arrived at the scene. Emergency teams launched immediate rescue and inspection operations to ensure that no workers were trapped under the debris. The site remained under the supervision of civic and emergency response teams for several hours as officials assessed structural risks.

The incident has intensified scrutiny of the BNCMC's enforcement actions against unsafe structures. Local residents and workers questioned the efficacy of merely issuing notices to hazardous buildings that continue to remain occupied and operational.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sapna Vasava stated that the civic administration has taken note of the collapse and that strict legal action will be initiated against the factory owner. This action will follow the directions of the Municipal Commissioner and applicable laws. An inquiry is expected to investigate why the factory continued to operate despite the prior warnings.
