Uber launches new video recording and ambulance safety features in Mumbai

Uber has launched a suite of new safety features in Mumbai and across India, including in-app video recording and emergency ambulance assistance, aimed at enhancing security for both passengers and drivers. The announcement of these technology-driven measures was made on Tuesday, July 1, as part of the ride-hailing company's efforts to strengthen its emergency response system and establish higher safety standards for the industry.

Among the newly introduced features is 'Record My Ride,' which allows drivers to securely record encrypted video inside the vehicle cabin using their own smartphones if they feel unsafe during a trip. To protect privacy, these recordings remain fully encrypted and cannot be viewed by either the driver or Uber unless the driver chooses to submit them as part of an official safety report.

To improve emergency medical response, Uber has partnered with medical logistics provider Dial 4242. This partnership introduces 'Ambulance Assistance' through Uber's existing 24x7 Safety Line, allowing both riders and drivers to quickly request medical help in the event of an accident during a trip.

Additionally, Uber has rolled out a 'Don't Type & Drive' feature to tackle distracted driving. This tool disables manual typing within the driver app while the vehicle is in motion. Another security addition is the 'Set Your Own PIN' feature, which enables riders to set up and manage a personalised trip verification PIN for added security.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari welcomed the safety initiative, stating that technology plays a vital role in promoting road safety and enhancing emergency response.

Sooraj Nair, Uber India and South Asia Head of Safety Operations, emphasized the importance of these updates, stating that safety innovations should serve as the baseline for the ride-hailing industry rather than just a differentiator.
