Ulwe Police Book Couple for Allegedly Duping Retired CIDCO Staffer of Rs 10 Lakh

A 69-year-old retired CIDCO employee residing in Shivajinagar, Ulwe, has filed a police complaint against his elder son and daughter-in-law for allegedly misappropriating Rs 10 lakh from his bank account, which had been set aside for his medical treatment and old-age expenses.

The complainant, identified as Ankush Thakur, stated that his son Sachin Thakur and daughter-in-law Vidya had earlier assured him that they would look after him and his wife in their old age. Trusting their assurance, Thakur opened a joint bank account with the couple to manage funds received from a land transaction and to handle legal expenses.

According to the complaint, Sachin and Vidya later stopped caring for the elderly couple, which forced Thakur and his wife to move out and live with their younger son.

The alleged misappropriation came to light when Thakur recently visited the bank to withdraw funds for his daily living needs and medical care. Upon checking his balance, he discovered that Rs 10 lakh had been withdrawn from the account without his knowledge or consent.

When Thakur confronted his son and daughter-in-law about the missing funds, they allegedly subjected him to abuse and threats instead of offering an explanation. Thakur further alleged that the couple caused him mental harassment and also lodged complaints against his younger son and daughter-in-law.

Based on Thakur's complaint, the Ulwe police registered a case against Sachin and Vidya under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.

A police officer stated that the complainant was reliant on the bank savings for his medical needs and daily survival. Investigators are currently reviewing bank statements and financial records to ascertain how the money was withdrawn and to determine the exact role of the accused in the alleged misappropriation.
