Unexpected Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Cause Traffic Delays in Thane and MMR

Thane and several parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) were hit by unexpected heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds during the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 8, 2026. The intense weather caught local commuters by surprise as the severity of the downpour far exceeded the green alert forecast previously issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The heavy downpour affected multiple key areas across the metropolitan region. In addition to Thane, intense showers and strong winds were reported in western suburbs such as Andheri, Goregaon, and Borivali, as well as eastern areas like Ghatkopar and northern zones like Mira Road. Residents woke up to intense showers and strong winds that marked a stark contrast to the milder weather anticipated under the green alert.
The sudden storm had a direct impact on the morning commute. Commuters heading out during the early morning rush hour faced challenging conditions as the rain intensity rapidly increased. The severe weather led to waterlogging at isolated locations across the affected areas, making roads difficult to navigate.
Consequently, traffic movement slowed down significantly during the peak morning hours. Drivers and public transport users experienced delays as vehicles crawled through waterlogged patches. The combination of heavy rain, active thunderstorms, and gusty winds contributed to the overall slowdown on the region's roads.
Despite the initial green alert forecast, the actual weather conditions turned out to be much more severe, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the weather pattern in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Local commuters had to quickly adapt to the sudden onset of waterlogging and traffic disruptions throughout the morning, as the intense showers in several parts of the region exceeded the forecast.
