Valuables Worth Rs 49,000 Stolen From Flight Baggage, Sahar Police Register FIR
Sahar police have registered an FIR against an unidentified person after Hajira Abutahir, a 36-year-old homemaker from Chennai, reported valuables worth Rs 49,000 missing from her luggage following a flight from Mumbai to Chennai. Abutahir, who had been staying at her maternal home in Mumbai’s Dharavi locality, travelled back to Mumbai to lodge the police complaint on Monday.
The incident occurred after Abutahir departed from Dharavi on July 29 at 7 pm in her brother Abdulrazzak's car to reach the airport. She checked in a grey suitcase and a black bag at the Air India counter for her flight to Chennai.
Upon landing in Chennai, Abutahir opened her baggage and discovered that several pieces of jewellery were missing. The stolen items included two gold earrings, a gold ring featuring a floral design, and a silver anklet, with a collective value of Rs 49,000.
Abutahir subsequently reviewed the entire CCTV footage at the Chennai airport with authorities. The footage confirmed that her bags were not tampered with after arrival in Chennai, establishing that the theft took place at the Mumbai airport after she handed over her luggage for cargo loading.
Following the discovery, Abutahir returned to Mumbai ten days after her flight to file the official complaint. The Sahar police registered the case and suspect that the crime took place while the baggage was being moved and loaded into the aircraft cargo hold.
Investigators from Sahar police station have requested CCTV footage from airport authorities and other involved agencies to identify the culprit. Police are actively gathering information on loaders and staff hired from third-party agencies who had access to the luggage.
In addition, officers are probing whether the suspects used scanning devices to locate valuable items inside passenger baggage prior to loading them onto flights. Police stated that there are currently ten pending baggage theft cases under investigation at the station this year.
