Vanrai Police Arrest Professor, Transporter in ₹94-Lakh Fraud Case
The Vanrai police in Goregaon East have arrested an engineering college professor and a transporter from Raipur, Chhattisgarh, in connection with a ₹94-lakh cheating case dating back to early 2024. The accused, 39-year-old professor Kamlesh Sahu and transporter Virendra Tanwar, were apprehended from Sector 27 and Naya Raipur on Friday following a coordinated search operation.
The two suspects had been on the run and had stopped using their mobile phones to avoid detection by law enforcement. Investigators from the Vanrai police station tracked them down after informants tipped them off that the duo had relocated to Naya Raipur. Sahu was traced to the area where he was hiding with his wife, while Tanwar was nabbed at around 3 pm on the premises of Aranya Bhavan, the Forest Department Main Office.
According to the police, the fraud took place between January and March 2024 at Box N Freight Logistics Solution Private Limited, a Goregaon-based firm that arranges domestic and international courier and cargo services. The company's zonal head, Dev Sharma, allegedly colluded with Sahu and Tanwar to generate fake e-way bills, false receipts, and forged company stamps to simulate paper transactions worth ₹94 lakh without delivering any actual transport services.
The alleged scam came to light when company director Prashant Shettikar noticed discrepancies in the accounts and filed a police complaint. Sharma was arrested from Bengaluru a month and a half ago and is currently in jail. Police stated that Sharma received a ₹4 lakh commission from Sahu and Tanwar for approving the fake bills, with ₹2 lakh credited to his wife's bank account.
The FIR lodged on Shettikar's complaint also lists Ravi Gupta, owner of M Trucky Online Transport, as well as Fraka Shipping owners Ankita Rai, Pragati Singh, and Tanwar. The arrests were made as part of a citywide drive ordered by Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti instructing local police stations to trace absconders in pending cases.
