Varsha Gaikwad Blames BMC After Kurla Landslide Kills Seven in Mumbai

Seven people were killed and seven others sustained injuries after a heavy rain-triggered landslide struck a chawl in Kurla in the early hours of Wednesday. Following the tragedy, Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad accused the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation of failing to put necessary pre-monsoon safety measures in place.

The landslide struck the residential chawl after intense rainfall hit Mumbai, trapping residents under the collapsed earth and debris. Emergency teams launched search and rescue operations at the Kurla site, which extended late into Wednesday evening.

At least two more individuals were feared trapped beneath the debris as rescue personnel worked to clear the rubble and locate missing occupants.

Addressing the incident, Varsha Gaikwad targeted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for civic negligence, alleging that adequate pre-monsoon safety precautions were not taken by the civic body to prevent such disasters in vulnerable areas.
