Varsha Gaikwad To Raise Mumbai Suburban Railway Safety Issue In Parliament

Mumbai Congress president and Lok Sabha MP Varsha Gaikwad announced on July 16, 2026, that she will raise the issue of passenger safety on Mumbai's suburban railway network in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. Speaking on the security of commuters, Gaikwad claimed that traveling on the city's vital transit system has become increasingly unsafe due to a rise in crimes.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Gaikwad accused the Maharashtra government and railway authorities of failing to protect the passengers who rely on the suburban rail network. The network, which is widely regarded as the lifeline of Mumbai, serves millions of daily commuters.
According to Gaikwad, the safety of passengers has been compromised by a rise in serious offenses on the transit system. She specifically highlighted a rise in assaults, murders, and crimes against women as primary concerns that need immediate attention from the authorities. These claims were also reported by the PTI.
The Congress party plans to highlight these suburban railway safety issues during the Parliament session. The upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament is scheduled to begin on July 20, 2026. Gaikwad stated that the party will use this platform to demand better security measures and hold the responsible agencies accountable.
The criticisms target both the state administration of Maharashtra and the railway authorities. By raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, the Mumbai Congress president aims to draw national attention to the daily security challenges faced by local train commuters in Mumbai, urging the government to take concrete steps to prevent further criminal incidents on the network.
