Varun Dhawan Starred Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Opens To Mixed Reviews

The Hindi comedy-romance film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, starring Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde, and Mrunal Thakur, released in theatres across Maharashtra and India on June 5, 2026. The film, which attempts to recreate the chaotic comedy style of filmmaker David Dhawan, received a mixed response from critics, earning a 2.5 out of 5 rating due to its weak screenplay.
The story follows Jass, played by Varun Dhawan, an optimistic man who marries Bani, played by Mrunal Thakur. Their marriage faces trouble when Bani prioritises her career over starting a family, leading to a six-month separation period before divorce. During this time, Jass falls in love with Preet, played by Pooja Hegde. The plot descends into chaos when Jass finds himself managing relationships with both women, who both become pregnant while he is still legally married.
While the premise offers potential for situational comedy, critics noted that the screenplay written by Yunus Sajawal fails to consistently deliver. The first half of the film is described as sluggish, with several jokes feeling stretched and punchlines failing to land.
However, the film gains momentum in its second half as the consequences of Jass's actions escalate into entertaining, chaotic situations.
Varun Dhawan's performance was widely praised as the main saving grace of the film. Critics highlighted his high-energy acting, sharp comic timing, and ability to keep the film afloat despite the weak writing.
Co-stars Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde were noted for bringing glamour to their roles, though their characters lacked depth. Among the supporting cast, Maniesh Paul was recognized for delivering some of the funniest moments in the film, while Jimmy Shergill added humour as a protective brother. The film also features cameos by Johny Lever, Rajpal Yadav, Ali Asgar, Manoj Pahwa, Chunky Pandey, and Rakesh Bedi.
The film's soundtrack, featuring the track "Wow" and a reprised version of "Chunnari Chunnari – Let’s Go," was also highlighted as a positive element of the release.
