Vasai-Virar Power Crisis Triggers Transformer Explosions and Industrial Outages

Local MLA Sneha Dubey-Pandit has raised serious concerns in the State Legislative Assembly over a severe electricity crisis in the Vasai-Virar region, which recently triggered dangerous transformer explosions in Khopwadi, Manikpur, Sainagar, and Pachubandar, alongside massive power disruptions in the Poman industrial area. The ongoing crisis, marked by frequent unannounced outages and infrastructure failures, has severely disrupted daily life and caused heavy financial losses for local residents and businesses.
During her address in the ongoing monsoon session of the State Legislative Assembly, the Vasai constituency MLA highlighted the deteriorating state of the local electricity infrastructure. She pointed out that within a single two-day span, three to four transformer explosions occurred across Khopwadi, Manikpur, Sainagar, and Pachubandar. These explosions resulted in severe injuries to both local citizens and field employees of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), also known as Mahavitaran.
The industrial zones in the region have been among the worst affected by the unreliable power supply. MLA Dubey-Pandit highlighted a critical instance in the Poman industrial area, where the power supply tripped a staggering 22 times in a single day. This erratic electricity supply brought production lines at several small and medium-scale enterprises to a complete standstill, causing immense financial losses and mental harassment to local traders, entrepreneurs, and residents.
According to the legislator, the power distribution infrastructure managed by MSEDCL has faced persistent failures recently. The network has been plagued by snapped power cables, technical faults in feeder boxes, and overloaded, dilapidated transformers. These ongoing technical failures have repeatedly forced local residents to endure hours in pitch darkness.
Attributing the crisis to critical flaws and neglect within MSEDCL’s distribution system, the MLA demanded swift intervention from the state government. Her key demands include upgrading the power distribution network in Vasai taluka on a war footing and the immediate replacement of all dilapidated, worn-out, and overloaded transformers and electrical cables.
Furthermore, MLA Dubey-Pandit called for the allocation of dedicated funds to implement a permanent solution to the region's electricity woes. She also urged the government to establish an efficient and accountable administrative framework to strictly monitor and control MSEDCL's maintenance work.
