Vashi RTO Traces Auto Driver Who Refused to Speak Marathi in Viral Video

The Regional Transport Office in Vashi has launched a search for an autorickshaw driver after a video showing him challenging the transport department and refusing to speak Marathi went viral on social media.

In the circulating video, the driver is seen refusing to communicate in Marathi and allegedly stating that he would not speak the language but would continue to earn a livelihood through his autorickshaw. He also appears to direct a challenge toward the transport minister.

Following the spread of the clip, transport authorities initiated steps to identify and locate the driver, forming dedicated teams to track him down.

“Following the video, two teams were assigned to locate the driver. We even visited his house, but he was not to be found. It has been learnt that he has left for his hometown in Uttar Pradesh. Further action will be taken as and when he returns,” said Dattatray Sangolkar, deputy regional transport officer, Vashi.

The person seen in the footage has reportedly been identified as Sanjay Dubey, who describes himself in the video as the president of the Bharatiya Hindi Bhashik Vikas Sena Party.

Officials from the transport department are currently examining when and where the recording took place. Investigators are also verifying the ownership details of the vehicle's registration and checking whether the driver is in possession of all mandatory permits and documentation.

The search follows the transport department's directive making basic knowledge of Marathi mandatory for autorickshaw drivers. Authorities had set a grace period for drivers to learn the language, which officially ended on August 15. Subsequently, Marathi language training programmes were organised for autorickshaw operators at various centres across the city and under the RTO's jurisdiction.

RTO officials stated that operators providing public transport services are required to follow all applicable regulations and maintain courteous conduct with commuters. Authorities confirmed that the driver's documents and other relevant particulars will be examined, and further action will be initiated if violations are established.
