Western Railway Begins Construction on ₹150-Crore Vasai Road Terminus

Western Railway Begins Construction on ₹150-Crore Vasai Road Terminus

Western Railway has commenced on-ground construction on the long-pending ₹150.25-crore Vasai Road Railway Terminus project in Vasai Road, targeting integrated commissioning by March 2028. Following the award of major civil, track, electrical, and signalling contracts, railway authorities confirmed that the project is progressing on schedule without delays.

The entire terminus is being constructed on 4.5 hectares of existing railway land, eliminating any requirement for land acquisition or land transfer. According to a project status update dated September 30, initial yard clearing has progressed, with workers completing the dismantling of sorting-cum-dispatching lines 2 and 3.

Physical work on the 1,200-metre platform wall has reached 500 metres, representing roughly 41.6 per cent of the required structure. In addition, concrete cement (CC) apron construction and drainage works have both covered 70 metres each, amounting to about 5.8 per cent of their planned lengths. Site surveys, geotechnical investigations, and contractor mobilisation are currently underway for a planned skywalk and foot overbridge (FOB), alongside ongoing signalling and traction-related activities.

The project was originally sanctioned in March 2025 and is being implemented as a single-phase development. Western Railway awarded the traction contract in March 2026, followed in April by packages for the platform, cover shed, service building, apron, track, and electrical works. The signalling contract was awarded in May, and the tender for the skywalk, FOB, and miscellaneous works was finalized on September 3.

Out of the estimated ₹150-crore budget, the financial allocation includes ₹108.55 crore for civil works, ₹23.22 crore for signalling, ₹8.87 crore for traction electrical works, and ₹6.27 crore for general electrical works. Outlay for the current financial year has been set at ₹15 crore.

Once completed, the new terminus will encompass approximately 1.8 route kilometres and 5.1 track kilometres. The facility is designed to handle up to 12 trains, providing additional terminal capacity and operational flexibility while easing commuter pressure across the expanding Vasai-Virar and wider Palghar region.
