Western Railway collects Rs 69 crore from ticketless Mumbai commuters in first quarter

The Western Railway (WR) collected nearly Rs 69 crore in fines during intensive ticket-checking drives conducted across its network in Mumbai between April and June 2026. The massive enforcement campaign aimed to curb ticketless travel and regularize commuter ticketing across the suburban and outstation transit systems.

According to an official statement from the Western Railway, the ticket-checking teams detected more than 9.50 lakh ticketless and irregular passengers during the first quarter of the financial year 2026-27. The cases recorded during these three months also included commuters who were found traveling with unbooked luggage.

The intensive drives resulted in a substantial financial collection for the railway zone. The nearly Rs 69 crore generated in penalties represents a growth of over 17 per cent compared to the revenue collected during the corresponding period of the previous year.

A notable highlight of the first-quarter drive was the sharp increase in penalties within the air-conditioned (AC) local trains. Officials revealed that fines collected from unauthorized passengers inside AC local services surged by nearly 160 per cent, indicating a strict crackdown on commuters boarding these premium local trains without valid AC tickets.

The Western Railway administration conducted these intensive drives across various stations and trains along the Mumbai network to ensure compliance and discourage irregular travel. The checking squads operated throughout the day to monitor commuters and enforce ticketing rules across all classes of travel.

The period of April to June 2026 marks the first quarter of the financial year 2026-27. During these three months, the Western Railway deployed ticket-checking staff across its Mumbai network to monitor commuters. The intensive drives were aimed at ensuring that all passengers carried valid tickets for their journeys.

With over 9.50 lakh cases of ticketless and irregular travel detected, the railway authorities have urged commuters to travel with proper and valid tickets to avoid penalties. The ticket-checking activities are part of ongoing efforts by the Western Railway to maintain order and ensure revenue realization across its rail network.
