Western Railway Demolishes 500 Illegal Structures in Bandra's Garib Nagar
Western Railway has successfully demolished approximately 500 illegal structures in Bandra's Garib Nagar as part of a major anti-encroachment drive. The recent operation in Garib Nagar represents one of the largest such exercises undertaken by the railway administration in recent years, serving as the starting point for a much larger campaign to reclaim railway land.
According to railway authorities, Western Railway has identified around 9,500 illegal encroachments on railway land along the busy Churchgate–Virar suburban corridor. Officials are currently planning to clear the remaining structures in a phased manner.
A senior Western Railway official confirmed that the recent Garib Nagar demolition was a key component of this larger, systematic exercise aimed at reclaiming valuable railway land. "There are around 9,500 encroachments along the Churchgate–Virar corridor. The remaining encroachments will be cleared gradually and phase-wise across different locations," the official stated.
The Churchgate–Virar section is recognized as one of the country's busiest suburban rail corridors, carrying millions of commuters and passengers every single day. Because of the heavy daily traffic and high passenger volume, railway officials emphasized that encroachments on railway land pose severe safety concerns for everyone involved.
In addition to these critical safety issues, officials explained that the illegal structures hinder necessary routine maintenance activities along the tracks. They also create physical obstacles for key infrastructure projects, including planned station upgrades and capacity enhancement works. Reclaiming the railway land is therefore considered absolutely essential to improve operational efficiency and to facilitate future railway development.
Looking ahead, officials said that future anti-encroachment actions will be carried out in a highly planned manner. The railway administration plans to work in close coordination with both local authorities and the police to ensure the smooth and safe execution of the upcoming demolition phases across the corridor.
