Western Suburbs Record 71 mm of Rain as IMD Issues Orange Alert for Mumbai

Heavy monsoon rainfall lashed Mumbai on Monday, July 6, 2026, with the Western Suburbs recording 71 mm of rain between 8 am and 8 pm. Following the intense downpour, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Tuesday, warning of continued heavy to extremely heavy rain and strong winds across the city, the Eastern Suburbs, the Island City, and the adjoining Konkan and ghat regions.

The monsoon showers on Monday brought varying levels of rainfall across Mumbai's different zones, with the suburbs receiving significantly higher rainfall than the island city. While the Western Suburbs experienced the heaviest downpour with 71 mm of rain, the Eastern Suburbs followed closely, recording 69 mm of rainfall. In contrast, the Island City recorded a lower average of 31 mm during the same 12-hour window on July 6.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the intense monsoon activity is expected to continue. The weather agency warned of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds during the late hours of Monday. This warning particularly covers the Konkan region and the adjoining ghat areas.

The weather data collected over the 12-hour period on Monday highlights the uneven distribution of the rainfall across Mumbai and its surrounding areas. The IMD's warnings suggest that residents across the Western Suburbs, Eastern Suburbs, Island City, and the surrounding Konkan and ghat regions should prepare for continued severe weather conditions as the monsoon intensifies.
