Work Begins Under Gokhale Flyover in Andheri East to Build Sports Hub

Work has officially commenced on a major redevelopment project to transform a neglected public space beneath the Gokhale Flyover on N. S. Phadke Marg in Andheri East. The initiative, announced by Andheri East MLA Murji Patel, aims to convert the former dumping ground and fire hazard into a vibrant recreational and sports hub for local residents.

The site had previously fallen into disrepair, becoming a dumping ground for abandoned vehicles, scrap material, and debris. Local residents had repeatedly raised concerns regarding the deteriorating conditions of the space, citing it as a public nuisance and a potential fire safety hazard.

In response to these complaints, authorities acted to clear and reclaim the space within 48 hours. Following this initial phase, efforts were made over several months to maintain and secure the site while pursuing approvals and funding from various levels of government.

With the required financial approvals now secured, construction work on the project has officially begun. Once completed, the new community asset will feature a wide range of amenities. These include a botanical garden, a skate park, a half basketball court, a cricket turf, a bouldering area, an open gym, and a children's play area.

In addition to the sports and recreational facilities, the space will also house a study space, seating zones, public toilets, and an HBT dispensary.

Patel described the project as a major asset for residents living on both sides of N. S. Phadke Marg. He noted that the initiative reflects a broader commitment to reclaiming neglected, encroached, and misused public lands across Andheri and converting them into useful community spaces.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior BMC officials, engineers, BJP Mumbai secretary Acharya Pawan Tripathi, and several former and current corporators.
