Worker electrocuted at Ulwe construction site, builders and supervisor booked

A 45-year-old construction worker died of electrocution after coming into contact with a live electric wire in Sector 24, Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, on July 1. The incident, which occurred around 1:00 PM in the temporary living quarters of an under-construction residential building, has led the Ulwe police to book the project's builders, a site supervisor, and an electrical contractor for negligence.

The deceased, identified as Nur Salam Mohsin, was a native of the Balrampur district in Bihar. He was employed as a labourer at the Ulwe construction site and resided with his family on the first floor of the under-construction building, where the developers had provided accommodation for the workers.

The Ulwe police registered a First Information Report (FIR) following a complaint filed by Mohsin's wife, 38-year-old Anesa Nur Salam. Like her husband, Anesa also works as a labourer at the same construction site.

According to the police complaint, the construction firm's builders and the site management had negligently suspended a live electric wire from the iron grilles in the kitchen area used by the workers. Mohsin came into contact with the exposed wire while in the kitchen, suffered a severe and fatal electric shock, and died on the spot.

Following the complaint, the Ulwe police booked two partners of the construction firm, the site supervisor, and an unidentified electrical contractor who was responsible for the electrical installations at the site.

The case has been registered under Sections 106(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These sections pertain to causing death by negligence and acts committed with common intention. The police have stated that further investigation into the matter is currently underway to determine the exact sequence of events and liability.

This fatal accident is the second major electrocution incident reported in the Navi Mumbai region within a week. Earlier in the same week, two college students suffered electric shocks while wading through a waterlogged street in Nerul. Both students were hospitalised and are reportedly out of danger.
