Worli firefighters respond to car fire inside Mumbai Coastal Road tunnel

A car fire inside the South Mumbai-bound Mumbai Coastal Road tunnel prompted an emergency response from several area fire stations, including the Worli fire station, on Wednesday afternoon, July 15, 2026.
The incident began when motorist Sudhir Nair, who was driving through the South Mumbai-bound tunnel, noticed that a fire had broken out in his vehicle. Nair immediately contacted the emergency services to alert them to the situation.
According to SD Sawant, deputy chief fire officer, the Mumbai Fire Brigade control room acted immediately upon receiving the call from Nair. The control room notified the Worli, Gowalia Tank, and Nariman Point fire stations, dispatching fire engines from all three stations to the spot.
Alongside the fire brigade personnel, police officials and a 108 ambulance crew were also rushed to the tunnel to assist with the emergency.
The responding emergency teams faced initial challenges getting to the scene of the fire. Traffic congestion inside the Coastal Road tunnel briefly delayed the response of the fire brigade.
Despite the traffic delay, the fire brigade successfully extinguished the blaze. No casualties or injuries were reported from the incident.
The first firefighter to reach the scene of the Coastal Road tunnel blaze noted that the operation was relatively straightforward. The firefighter explained that the task was simplified because the burning car was not an electric vehicle (EV).
The emergency incident occurred after a busy period for the local emergency services. Prior to receiving the call from Nair on Wednesday afternoon, the Mumbai Fire Brigade had been dealing with a high volume of incidents, having received hundreds of calls related to tree collapses over the past few days.
