51-Year-Old Garment Dealer Dies After Jumping From Bandra Worli Sea Link

A 51-year-old garment dealer died on Friday after jumping off the Bandra Worli Sea Link into the sea. The incident occurred at around 11:55 am after the businessman, who was reportedly suffering from severe financial distress and pending loans, asked a taxi driver to stop on the bridge connecting to Bandra.

According to the Worli police, the Mumbai police main control room alerted them immediately after the man jumped. The police initially contacted local fishermen to assist with the rescue, but rough sea conditions prevented them from reaching the spot.

The Mumbai Sagari (marine) police and local fire brigade also attempted a rescue operation using patrol boats. They started from Yellow Gate but were forced to halt near the lighthouse due to the turbulent waters.

To retrieve the man, the Worli police again contacted the fire brigade, which deployed inflated rubber boats to navigate the rough seas. The rescue team successfully fished the man out of the water and transported him to BYL Nair Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The police have since sent his body for a post-mortem examination.

Prior to the incident, the businessman, who owned a garment store in Ghatkopar and an office in Dadar, had visited his shop and then traveled by train to Dadar. From Dadar, he took a taxi to the Siddhivinayak Temple. After visiting the temple, he boarded another cab heading towards Bandra.

During the journey, he instructed the cab driver to stop on the Bandra Worli Sea Link, left his mobile phone inside the vehicle, and jumped into the water.

Investigating officers revealed that the businessman had been facing heavy financial losses over the last six months. The Worli police have recorded a statement from the deceased's son, who confirmed that his father was deeply distressed by his pending loans.
