AIYF Leader Stages Tarmac Protest Over Delayed, AC-Less SpiceJet Flight to Mumbai

All India Youth Federation (AIYF) Maharashtra state joint secretary and Mumbai President Aamir Kazi staged a tarmac sit-in protest at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on August 14 after a Mumbai-bound SpiceJet flight suffered severe delays and operated without functional air conditioning.

Kazi, who had booked his first-ever flight to travel to Mumbai during a family emergency, boarded SpiceJet flight SG-800, which was originally scheduled to depart New Delhi at 10.30pm. Following extended delays in the terminal with minimal updates from the airline, passengers were eventually boarded onto the Boeing aircraft in the early hours of the morning.

Once inside the sealed cabin, passengers found that the air-conditioning system was non-functional, creating a stifling and oppressive environment. Faced with an unresponsive flight crew and deteriorating cabin conditions, Kazi disembarked from the aircraft and sat on the tarmac to stage a peaceful demonstration against the airline's passenger handling.

The demonstration on the airport apron prompted airline staff and ground handlers to intervene and address passenger grievances directly. According to flight tracking data, the flight eventually took off at 1.24am—almost three hours behind schedule—and landed at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at 3.02am.

Speaking about the incident, Kazi said that what was meant to be his first air travel experience quickly turned into a protest over basic passenger rights and poor management. He stated that he had opted for air travel due to an emergency expecting timely service and basic comfort, but found the conditions far below reasonable expectations.

Kazi called for stricter regulation and public accountability for commercial airlines, noting that air travel should not be treated merely as a profit-making venture where passenger dignity and comfort are sidelined.

SpiceJet has recorded significant operational struggles in recent months. In July, the airline registered an on-time performance rate of just 34.6% across ten major domestic airports, along with the second-highest cancellation rate in the country at 8.58% and the second-highest volume of passenger complaints among domestic carriers.
