BMC Approves Rs 702 Crore Underground Walkway to Worli Promenade

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Standing Committee has formally approved a proposal to construct a dedicated underground pedestrian walkway in Worli, creating a direct connection between the Nehru Science Centre Metro station on Metro Line-3, the Worli Promenade, and the proposed landscape garden along the coastal road project.
The large-scale infrastructure initiative carries an estimated project cost of Rs 702.44 crore. Under the approved framework, the BMC will bear the entire financial cost of the underground pathway, while the physical construction and implementation will be executed by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), according to details confirmed by Standing Committee Chairman Prabhakar Shinde.
The underground pedestrian route will measure approximately 1 kilometre in length and will have a width of 7.5 metres. The subterranean corridor is designed to provide pedestrians and transit commuters with direct, seamless, and easy access from the underground metro network to the major public and recreational spaces being developed along the Worli shoreline.
Among the key destinations served by the underground corridor is a proposed landscape garden planned across roughly 300 acres along the coastal road project. In addition to providing connectivity to this extensive green space, the walkway will also offer citizens direct pedestrian access to a reserved promenade located along the coastal road.
Following the clearance from the BMC Standing Committee, the project establishes a coordinated joint effort between the BMC and the MMRC to link the upcoming Metro Line-3 station at Nehru Science Centre with the Worli Promenade and coastal public amenities.
