BMC Launches Inspection Drive Across Mumbai Healthcare Establishments

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a special inspection drive across Mumbai to examine clinics, nursing homes, hospitals, maternity homes, and diagnostic centres for compliance with health, safety, and statutory regulatory norms.
The civic health department constituted dedicated inspection teams following directives from the Maharashtra state Health Department, which ordered a statewide campaign covering clinical establishments. Teams will inspect sonography centres and other healthcare facilities to assess patient safety, infrastructure, and adherence to applicable laws.
According to the state Health Department's circular, civic teams will review compliance with several statutory frameworks. These include Clinical Establishments regulations, the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Act, Biomedical Waste Management Rules, fire safety standards, and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations.
Officials participating in the drive have been instructed to document violations in a prescribed format. Establishments found flouting mandatory norms will face action under relevant legal provisions.
The inspection teams will compile daily progress reports detailing the number of establishments inspected, violations detected, and specific observations recorded during visits. These reports must be signed by the designated officers and submitted daily to the Assistant Health Officer (Nursing Homes).
The Assistant Health Officer will forward the documentation to the Executive Health Officer, who will subsequently submit the reports to the Deputy Director of the Directorate of Health Services.
A senior BMC officer noted that the drive will also help the civic body identify quacks and unregistered nursing homes operating across Mumbai and its suburbs. The official stated that the inspections will generate accurate records, making it easier for the civic administration to take legal action against illegal establishments.
The initiative is intended to strengthen regulatory oversight over private healthcare providers and ensure that patient care is delivered in facilities equipped with proper infrastructure in line with statutory safety requirements.
