Four Booked for Cheating in Sanskrit University Exam at IIT Powai
The Powai Police have registered a case against four candidates for allegedly using modified mobile devices to cheat during a Group-D Multi-Tasking Staff recruitment examination held at Kendriya Vidyalaya on the IIT Bombay campus in Powai on Sunday.
The recruitment examination for the 'peon' post was conducted by Central Sanskrit University and was scheduled between 9 am and 10.30 am. A total of 324 candidates were expected to appear across 14 examination rooms. Security measures were put in place prior to the test, including the installation of mobile jammers across all examination rooms to prevent cheating through electronic devices. Candidates were allowed inside the venue only after undergoing security checks at the entrance, with seating arranged for 24 candidates per room monitored by two invigilators.
The incident came to light during the exam when an invigilator stationed in Room No. 26 noticed a candidate behaving suspiciously and alerted the exam complainant, the principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Powai. The candidate was subsequently taken for a full-body scan, during which security staff detected a suspicious object in his trouser pocket. As a security guard attempted to check the object, the candidate allegedly tried to flee the examination centre, but security personnel managed to stop him and recovered a modified electronic device from his pocket.
Following the initial detection, exam officials conducted similar full-body checks in Rooms 20, 62, 68, and 81. Modified electronic devices were allegedly recovered from three additional candidates during these inspections. Campus authorities alerted the local police, who seized the modified mobile phones from the accused.
The Powai Police confirmed that a formal case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police officials stated that the accused candidates are reportedly from Haryana, and further investigation into the incident is currently underway.
