Girish Mahajan puts Maharashtra on high alert ahead of heavy rain forecast

On July 2, 2026, Maharashtra Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan issued a high alert urging citizens to stay indoors and directing government agencies to prepare for heavy rainfall forecasted for July 3 and July 5, 2026. Following a visit to the State Emergency Operations Centre at Mantralaya in Mumbai, Mahajan reviewed the state's preparedness as rivers and streams began overflowing across several districts.

The minister met with key officials, including Principal Secretary Vinita Ved Singhal and Disaster Management Director Dr. Bhalchandra Chavan, to assess the situation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of intense rainfall over the coming days, prompting the state to strengthen its disaster response mechanisms.

Mahajan stated that rainfall had intensified across Maharashtra, causing water bodies to swell. In response, disaster management departments and emergency response teams across all districts have been placed on full alert. State and district-level control rooms are now operating 24/7 to monitor the situation and coordinate relief efforts.

The minister appealed to the public to follow administrative advisories and avoid stepping outside unless absolutely necessary. He emphasized that while the government is working to safeguard lives and property, cooperation from citizens is crucial during the monsoon season.

Addressing the situation in Mumbai, Mahajan noted that while heavy rain had caused waterlogging in some parts of the city, prompt action by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and other agencies successfully brought the situation under control, allowing normal life to resume. The state government remains in constant contact with the Mumbai civic administration to monitor traffic and water levels.

The government has released 24/7 helpline numbers for citizens seeking emergency assistance. The State Emergency Operations Centre can be reached at 1070, 9321587143, 022-22027990, and 022-22794229, while the district-level helpline is 1077.
