India Crosses 300 GW Non-Fossil Power Capacity, Maharashtra Reaches 62.53 GW

India has crossed 300 GW of installed non-fossil fuel power capacity and is on track to achieve its target of 500 GW by 2030, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
Speaking at a roadshow for the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026, Joshi highlighted the pace of the country's clean-energy growth and rising investor interest in the sector. He noted that roughly 17 GW of renewable energy capacity was added in the first four months of the current financial year alone.
Official figures show that as of July 31, India reached 300.50 GW of installed non-fossil fuel capacity. This represents more than 54 percent of the nation's overall installed electricity generation capacity. Solar power serves as the largest contributor, accounting for 164.59 GW of the total.
In Maharashtra, total renewable energy capacity reached 62.53 GW as of July 2026, according to Ministry Joint Secretary G.B.N. Subramanian. The state also secured a Guinness World Record after installing 45,911 solar agricultural pumps in the previous year.
Joshi noted that global investors continue to show strong interest in India's clean energy sector, with eight to 10 countries expected to partner in the upcoming summit scheduled for November 2 to 5, 2026. He also pointed to progress under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, stating that approximately 19 lakh households have received zero electricity bills after receiving subsidies to set up rooftop solar units.
Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, said citizen-focused schemes such as PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM, alongside manufacturing initiatives, have supported the expansion. He added that the sector must still address challenges related to grid integration, transmission infrastructure, digital integration, and distribution networks.
The Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 will cover green financing, solar and wind power, green hydrogen, energy storage, bioenergy, and manufacturing.
