JNPA Climbs to 21st Rank in Alphaliner Global Container Port Review
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Navi Mumbai climbed seven positions to secure the 21st rank among the world's top 30 container ports in Alphaliner's H1 2026 review, moving up from the 28th spot recorded in 2025. The port achieved a 13.6 per cent growth in container throughput compared to the first half of 2025.
The improvement in rankings occurred during a period of substantial global trade disruptions in the first half of 2026, which were triggered by the US-Iran conflict. To counter these challenges, JNPA introduced proactive measures to facilitate cargo movement, handle additional operational demands, and maintain continuity across EXIM trade operations.
JNPA Chairperson Gaurav Dayal, IAS, attributed the achievement to the coordinated efforts of terminal operators, stakeholders, and the broader port community.
“Their combined efforts have strengthened JNPA's capacity to provide dependable and effective cargo-handling services, especially in tackling the intricacies of worldwide trade interruptions throughout the year. We will build on this momentum to further elevate JNPA's ranking as one of the top container ports in the world,” Dayal said.
Alphaliner, a global intelligence provider for liner shipping data, evaluates container port performance based on cargo throughput. The latest review highlights JNPA's expanding role in maritime commerce as a key gateway for India's EXIM trade.
Currently, JNPA operates five container terminals: NSFT, NSICT, NSIGT, BMCT, and APMT. The port also includes a shallow water berth for general cargo operated by NSDT, liquid cargo handling facilities, and a coastal berth to support coastal cargo movement and maritime connectivity.
Spread across 277 hectares, JNPA also manages a multi-product Special Economic Zone equipped with infrastructure to support export-oriented industries. Additionally, the port authority is developing Vadhvan Port, an all-weather, deep-draft greenfield port in Maharashtra planned to serve as India's 13th major port.
